Update Regarding Weeki Wachee River Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Restoration Project Two Months Post Installation
body
BRIEF OVERVIEW
To assist in restoration and enhancement efforts, from May 27 through May 30, 2025, a total of 43,950 Mechanical Planting Units (MPUs), 660 four-inch peat pots, and 132 GrowSAV Herbivory Exclusion Devices were installed throughout the river between the state park boundary to the north, and Rogers Park to the south.
On August 5, 2025, Sea & Shoreline biologists returned to the project site to perform the second monthly maintenance event. The attached report is the second of four formal monitoring reports designed to quantify the success of the project.
In summary, the algae bloom and its impact on the planting units will continue to be monitored. Following the second monthly maintenance event, planting units are continuing to show encouraging signs of growth. Maintenance will continue for the next ten months, with the third event taking place in the next couple of weeks.
