Request Submitted by Library Services to Apply for Science Across America Grant Through HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and The Space Science Institute’s STAR Library Education Network a/k/a STAR Net
body
BRIEF OVERVIEW
Library Services seeks approval from the Board to submit a Request for Proposals (RFP) application for the Science Across America grant, offered through STAR Net and the Space Science Institute. This national initiative supports libraries in delivering STEAM-focused public programs connected to biology, earth science, citizen science, and local environmental engagement.
Participation in the project requires selected libraries to host two public STEAM programs, conduct a Community Dialogue with targeted audiences, engage underserved populations, and collaborate with STEAM and community partners. The library’s draft application outlines proposed programs, community partnerships, outreach strategies, and targeted underserved audiences, with an emphasis on youth in low-income and rural communities. The Spring Hill Branch Library will serve as the lead venue for program implementation.
The grant opportunity supports libraries in strengthening their STEAM education capacity, expanding citizen science involvement, and providing hyper-local, place-based learning experiences aligned with community needs.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
If selected, Library Services will receive a $500 honorarium to support program implementation, along with educational resources, training, and activity materials at no cost to the County.
LEGAL NOTE
The Board has the authority to act upon this matter pursuant to Chapter 125, Florida Statutes.
