BRIEF OVERVIEW
The America 250 Florida Grant Program, administered by the Florida Department of State, supports civic, cultural, and educational projects that commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. With a focus on promoting the principles of liberty, self-government, and national unity, the grant encourages programs that deepen public understanding of America's founding ideals and honor those who have defended them.
In alignment with these goals, the Hernando County Public Library System proposes "Voices of Liberty: Civic Literacy and Living History at the Library", a year-long, all-ages initiative designed to promote civic education, cultural engagement, and historical reflection. Through strategic partnerships with the Daughters of the American Revolution, local veterans' groups, and community educators, the Library will offer inclusive programming that reinforces democratic values and honors those who have preserved them.
Key elements include a Founding Principles Family Night, an engaging Veterans Day Tribute, and winter programming such as Civics Through Storytime, a Let Freedom Read! Winter Reading Challenge, and an American Symbols exhibit. Spring 2026 will feature a Charters of Freedom lecture mini-series and a Living History Day with reenactors and student dramatizations. The initiative will culminate in Freedom Is..., a community art project inviting patrons of all ages to reflect on the meaning of freedom through visual and written expression.
