Submittal of Emergency Medical Services Matching Grant Application to State Department of Health for Purchase of Automated External Defibrillators for Hernando County Fire and Emergency Services

body

BRIEF OVERVIEW

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) provides a grant opportunity annually through an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) matching grant.  The DOH funds 75% of the grant and 25% is funded through local funds.  Hernando County Fire Rescue (HCFR) is requesting Board approval for the Department to apply to DOH for the purpose of purchasing forty (40) automated external defibrillators (AED) for County buildings.

These devices are used to help people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.  The AEDs are easy to use medical devices that can analyze the hearts rhythm and if necessary, deliver a defibrillation to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.  Sudden cardiac arrest is among the leading causes of death in the United States and these devices have become very common to see in most offices and public buildings.

The application will follow the grant policy by review and approval of County grant personnel.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

A budget amendment will be presented to the Board at the time of grant award for Account No. 1691-32201-5305264 Uncapitalized Equipment for purchase.  The EMS matching grant is a 75% award with 25% matching funds, the matching portion is anticipated to be less than $15,000.00 from Account No. 1691-02491-5999078.

LEGAL NOTE

The Board is authorized to take action on this matter pursuant to Chapter 125, Florida Statutes.
