Presentation Regarding Five-Year Update of Weeki Wachee Basin Management Action Plan, and Homosassa and Chassahowitzka Springs Groups Basin Management Action Plan

body

BRIEF OVERVIEW

As required by the Clean Waterways Act, the Department of Environmental Protection must prepare updates to its nutrient Basin Management Action Plan’s (BMAPs). The updated BMAP(s) require additional reductions of nitrogen must be achieved to meet the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) associated with the spring(s).  TMDL refers to the maximum amount of a pollutant that a water body can receive and still meet water quality standards.

The update to the Weeki Wachee Basin Management Action Plan (BMAP) and the Homosassa/Chassahowitzka Springs Groups BMAP, dated April 2025, is marked as a "draft" because it is still under review and not yet officially adopted.  Draft versions of BMAP updates are typically prepared ahead of formal presentations to allow stakeholders, including local governments, agencies, and the public, to review and provide feedback.  The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and local partners are undergoing the public comment period.  Revisions could be made based on comments, public feedback, or agency coordination before finalization.

The adoption of the final version is estimated for July 1, 2025. All documents are considered draft until the final adoption.
