Acceptance of FY 2023 US Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program Grant for Sheriff’s Office

BRIEF OVERVIEW
The Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) has awarded the Hiring Program Grant to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office in the amount of $500,000.
On April 25, 2023, the Board of County Commissioners authorized the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office to apply for this grant. The grant will be used to fund four (4) new deputy sheriff positions. These positions will be entry-level patrol deputies and will allow four (4) seasoned deputies to join our Community Oriented Policing Unit.
The match required of $131,232 was not budgeted in Fiscal Year 2024. The Sheriff’s Office is requesting the Board provide funds to cover the match.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The grant funds will be budgeted through the Sheriff’s Office. The required local match is $131,232.00. Decrease $131,232.00 budget reserves/cash forward 0011-05981-5909999. Increase $131,232.00 fees & cost-sheriff 0011-02051-5909185.

The Board has the authority to act on this matter pursuant to Chapter 125, Florida Statutes.

RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Board approve and authorize the Chairperson’s signature on the attached letter designating Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Accounting Specialist, Jacob Lynch, to accept the grant award via JustGrants on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners. It is further recommended that the Board approve and authorize the Chairperson’s signature on the attached associated budget resolution to provide funding for the required match.
