BRIEF OVERVIEW

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) helps to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with fire-related hazards through the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) Grant. The AFG program objectives are to provide critically needed resources that equip and train emergency personnel to help support community resilience. Hernando County Fire and Emergency Services has been awarded $136,363.63 with a matching amount of $13,636.37 totaling $150,000 for tuition reimbursement of thirty (30) paramedic courses.

 

STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVES

GOAL B.1 Public Safety Operational Readiness

OBJECTIVE B.1.2 Seek opportunities to expand recruitment and training capabilities for public safety personnel, aiming to improve retention and readiness.

 

FINANCIAL IMPACT

A budget resolution will come to the Board at a future meeting for approval.

The Board is authorized to act on this matter pursuant to Chapter 125, Florida Statutes.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Board accept the Department of Homeland Security FY 2025 Grant Program award (No. EMW-2025-FG-00631) and designate Fire Chief Paul Hasenmeier to electronically accept the award per the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) grant policies.
