body

BRIEF OVERVIEW

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) has announced the Fiscal Year 2023 COPS Hiring Program (CHP) application funding period. This program furthers the COPS Office’s goal of advancing public safety through community policing by funding additional full time career law enforcement positions.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is asking for approval to submit an application for funding to hire four (4) deputy sheriffs within the award period. The maximum federal share per officer position is $125,000 over the three-year period. The local match required is 25% the first year and will increase the 2nd and 3rd year.

The application is still in the early stages of writing at this time. Due to the application deadline of May 11, 2023, we are requesting the Board of County Commissioners authorize the Sheriff’s Office to submit the application for funding. If this grant is awarded, documentation will be presented to the Board for acceptance.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

No financial impact at this time. If awarded the grant, there will be an increase in revenue to the grant department.  The required local match is 25% the first year and will increase the 2nd and 3rd years.  After year 3, the positions will be part of the personnel budget of the Sheriff.

LEGAL NOTE

The Board may take the recommended action pursuant to Chapter 125, Florida Statutes.
