Discussion Regarding Updated Wellhead Protection Areas
body
BRIEF OVERVIEW
On June 27, 1994, the Board of County Commissioners of Hernando County adopted Ordinance No. 94-8 which is codified as Article VII of Chapter 28 of the Hernando Code of Ordinances, entitled Groundwater Protection and Siting. On September 28, 2010, County Ordinance 2010-18 was adopted, entitled Prohibitions within Wellhead and Special Protection Areas. Wellhead protection areas (WHPA) and special protection areas (SPA) are established to ensure that activities which can cause contamination of ground water are restricted within those areas.
Hernando County Utilities Department tasked its Hydrogeological consultant (WSP) to use best available current technology and develop updated well head protection areas, with maps, and to update the current ordinance as appropriate. Using the updated technology, the WHPA’s have changed in size and configuration. Applying the new data, some properties currently within WHPA’s will be outside and others outside WHPA’s will now be included.
