BRIEF OVERVIEW
On May 9, 2024, the Department of Public Works (DPW) received an email request to determine the process that the Pine Island Property Owners Association (PIPOA) would need to complete to consider designating Pine Island as a golf cart friendly community.

DPW Engineering Staff provided the steps required for applying for golf cart accessible roadways in Hernando County on May 9, 2024, and at the property owner's meeting on May 25, 2024, the Board President was given the authority to make an official request. DPW received the official request from the PIOPA on May 30, 2024, requesting that the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) grant golf cart access on all the streets and roads on Pine Island.

On June 10, 2024, an addendum to the request was made to add an extension of the golf cart area to include two additional residences outside of the Pine Island limits (to 10386 Pine Island Drive) at the location of the start of the 35mph speed limit for the Pine Island Causeway.

Hurricanes Helene (September) and Milton (October) delayed the completion of the golf cart study for Pine Island.

The Department of Public Works Engineering Division has completed the study and considering the factors which include, speed, volume, vehicle classification, road geometrics, and crash reports, determined that golf carts may safely travel on or across the public roads or streets on Pine Island Drive between Cyclone Drive and Alfred A. McKethan Pine Island Park.

DPW has created an implementation plan to create a golf cart community on Pine Island. Through the implementation of 25MPH, Golf Cart in Street and No Carts Beyond this Point signage, the plan is presented to the BOCC for final approval.
