body
BRIEF OVERVIEW
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant (SAFER) was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, "front line" firefighters available in their communities. With the goal of SAFER to enhance the local fire departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards established by the National Fire Protection Association's codes and standards (NFPA) (NFPA 1710 and/or NFPA 1720) Hernando County Fire Rescue (HCFR) would like to apply for 13 new positions.
The period of performance for the grant is up to a maximum of 48 months with a 90-day default period for recruitment starting on the award date. Eligible costs for the positions funded under the SAFER Grant include salary and benefits, one entry-level physical per new recruit, one set of personal protective equipment (PPE) for structural firefighting and gear bags.
The SAFER Grant Program is one of three grant programs that constitute the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) focus on enhancing safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards. By providing funding from the program directly to fire departments the program assists in increasing the number of 24-hour firefighter staffing to assist local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities to respond to emergencies and ensure that communities have adequate protection. With enhanced staffing levels, recipients should experience a reduction in response times and an increase in the number of trained personnel assembled at the incident scene.
