body
BRIEF OVERVIEW
On September 13, 2022, the Board approved the submittal of Safe Street and Roads for All (SS4A) grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation for FY 2022 Grant Program to Develop, Thinking Outside the Car: Hernando's Safe Streets for all Action Plan.

On July 11, 2023, the Board approved a grant agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation under FY 2022 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program for Hernando's Safe Streets for All Action Plan and associated budget resolution.

Hernando County was awarded $414,374.00 ($328,374 Federally Funded; $86,000.00 Locally Funded) to develop an Action Plan outlining strategies to promote safety and equity that will include innovative technology based and low-cost, high impact strategies to improve user safety within Hernando County. The County will consider options such as enhanced delineations, speed safety cameras, safety edge, safe streets criteria and road safety audits on particular roadways, including other safety enhancements.

Development of the Action Plan starts with a request for the Board to adopt a goal for zero roadway fatalities or an ambitious percentage reduction. The attached resolution proposes to adopt a Vision Zero Policy as a strategy to achieve the policy goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injury crashes while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all in Hernando County. The resolution also authorizes the Department of Public Works - Engineering Division to lead the implementation of the Safety Action Plan.

FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no financial impact to adopt the proposed resolution.
