Amendment of Contract With Sheriff’s Office for Participation in Inmate Work Squad Program

BRIEF OVERVIEW

Since May, 2011, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and the Board of County Commissioners have had a contract in place to provide the Department of Public Works for the use of inmate labor in work programs.

 

On August 24, 2021, the Board of County Commissioners approved the renewal of a contract with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office for Participation in the Inmate Work Squad Program.   The approved contract amount was for $76,925.00 for a three-year term period with three one-year renewal periods, with a clause for annual increases equal to that given to all deputy sheriffs employed by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

 

On June 17, 2022 staff received a letter from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office requesting a five percent (5%) increase to the contract for Fiscal Year 2023.  This is a $3,936.95 increase, totaling $82,465.95.

 

The Department of Public Works and Sheriff’s Office request that the Board approve the price increase effective October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2024.

 

FINANCIAL IMPACT

Funding for the FY 2023 Sheriff’s Office Inmate Work Squad contract is included in Account 1017-03232-5303401 (LOGT 1-6, Road Maintenance, Contracted Services).

The Board has the authority to approve this item pursuant to Florida Statutes §125.01.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Board approve the attached request for increase to the Contract with the Sheriff’s Office for the continued use of inmate labor by the Department of Public works in the amount of $82,465.95 annually.
