BRIEF OVERVIEW

Since May 2011, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and Board of County Commissioners have had a contract in place to provide the Department of Public Works with the use of inmate labor for work programs.  The contract’s most recent renewal period expired on September 30, 2024.  Staff from both organizations negotiated a new contract for an annual price of $95,714.23.  The contract utilizes one (1) inmate work squad from the Hernando County Jail located on Spring Hill Drive.  The contract is for a one-year period with three one-year renewal, with a clause for annual increases equal to that given to all deputy sheriffs employed by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

 

The Department of Public Works and the Sheriff’s Office request that the Board approve the renegotiated contract.

 

FINANCIAL IMPACT

Funds in the amount of $95,714.23 are available from Hernando County Department of Public Works:

 

Fund:  1017 - LOGT 1-6 Fuel-Genl Transportation, Department:  03232 - Road Maintenance-LOGT 1-6, Account:  5303401 - Contracted Services.

 

LEGAL NOTE

The Board has the authority to act on this matter pursuant to Chapter 125, Florida Statutes.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Board approve and authorize the Chairman’s signature on attached Contract No. 25023 with the Sheriff’s Office for the continued use of inmate labor by the Department of Public Works in the amount of $95,714.23 annually.
