BRIEF OVERVIEW

The Hernando County Mermaid Tale Trail is honored to have been selected as the winner of the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC) 2024 “Built Environment” Award.  The award was presented at the TBRPC Resiliency Summit on May 10, 2024.  The Built Environment Category encompassed the following ideals:

 

                     Demonstrate best industry practices, promote compact development, and/or redevelopment in existing urban areas.

                     Preserve our history, beautify public spaces, and contribute to a unique regional identity.

                     Improve the health and well-being of people and communities.

                     Innovative infrastructure projects that deliver multiple public benefits.

 

Twenty-seven colorful, vibrant, larger-than-life mermaid statues now grace parks, business fronts and historic city streets throughout Hernando County as sites on the Mermaid Tale Trail.  Hernando County’s Mermaid Tale Trail is a shining example of how preserving history, beautifying public spaces, and contributing to the unique regional showcases the power of collaboration amount artists, organizations, residents, and businesses in creating a lasting impact on the region.  The joy and momentum generated by the Mermaid Tale Trail transcends outdoor beautification; it celebrates iconic regional heritage and sparks imagination amount young and old alike.
