Notification of Letter to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Requesting Seasonal Closure of Hospital Hole Included in Weeki Wachee River System for Manatee Protection
body
BRIEF OVERVIEW
Staff submitted a letter to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requesting seasonal closures of Hospital Hole located within the Weeki Wachee River to protect manatees during winter months.
The Hospital Hole is a primary warm-water refuge where manatees congregate in colder weather. Increased boat traffic and recreational activities (kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, diving, and fishing) raise concerns about disturbance and potential harm from citizens.
The requested seasonal closure would reduce human impacts and help ensure manatee survival during cold-weather periods.
